A Brief History
AWA is the International Women’s Club of Vienna, a vibrant and supportive English-speaking community of more than 250 women representing over 40 countries. We bring together international and Viennese women to make friends, build connections, and feel at home while discovering life in Vienna.
Founded in 1924, AWA has a long and meaningful history. The group paused in 1939 during the war, and in the post-war years, members supported vulnerable Austrian children through initiatives such as the Children’s Friendship Fund. AWA became active again in 1964 with around 60 members and continues today with the same spirit of women supporting women.
Over more than a century, AWA has grown alongside Vienna, becoming part of its diverse and international community. While much has evolved, our purpose remains the same: bringing women together, helping one another navigate life in a new place, and creating a sense of belonging, whether in Vienna for a short time or for years to come.
